The magical series of paintings that I call “Collisions” originally had a different title: “Collisions of Cosmic Energy.” At first, it was an offshoot of my major cycle “Cosmoses,” full of colour and expression. My initial idea was to record motion in outer space over 50 million years, and to attempt a painterly notation of what is happening there.
Over time, these works took on a far deeper meaning for me—especially after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine and the resulting re-evaluation of what truly matters in life. I have remained faithful to the title and to the “Collisions,” but today they embody everything we struggle with in life: in our actions, our thoughts, and our inner processes.
I have remained true to the concept of 50 layers of paint, to the title in the sense of “Collisions,” and also to the formats, as these paintings exist in only two sizes: 150 × 110 (or 100) cm and 100 × 100 cm. The only exception is a series of tondos with diameters of 100, 80, or 50 cm—but that is a long story.
If you want a slightly more “curatorial” version (more formal, less personal), I can produce an alternative in the same meaning.
